Kathmandu, nov 21/ British Columbia Provincial Government’s Minister of Minerals Jagrupp Brar welcomes Nepali community in provincial assembly

Representatives of the Nepal Culture Society of British Columbia and the Hindu, Buddhist Foundation of Canada, formed by the Nepali community, have been specially invited to the provincial assembly of the province of British Columbia, Canada.

On Tuesday, British Columbia Provincial Government’s Minister of Minerals Jagrupp Brar welcomed the Nepali community while speaking at the provincial assembly. He praised the cultural contribution made by Nepalis in Colombia.

He said that Nepalis living in various cities of the state in Colombia have made significant contributions to making the culture diverse and prosperous.

Nepal Culture Society of British Columbia President Raju Bhattarai, his wife Madhu Bhattarai, member Shankar Bhandari and his wife, Hindu-Buddhist of Foundation Canada Secretary Parasar Malla, Raj Sigdel and others were welcomed at the provincial assembly. It is said that Foundation President Madhusudhan Acharya could not participate in the program as he came to Nepal in mourning for his mother.

Nepal Culture Society of British Columbia President Bhattarai said that the proposal to celebrate Nepal Day on May 29, 2026, commemorating the first ascent of Mount Everest on May 29, 1953, is being made by Premier (Chief Minister) David Robert Patrick Abby, Minister of Labour Robi Kalo, member of the provincial assembly, and secretary of the provincial parliament Amna Sah. They have listened to the proposal carefully and are in the process of implementing it.

President Bhattarai said that there are still two discussions to be held to celebrate Nepal Day in the provincial assembly of the state of British Columbia.

The respect and trust given to them (the Nepali community) by the provincial assembly and the provincial government is a sign that the activities of the Nepalis are right, and they are ready to celebrate Nepal Day with joy. Chairman Bhattarai said that after celebrating Nepal Day, the Nepali language and culture will not only receive government recognition, but also the identity of the Nepalis will be strengthened and established.

Nepal Day, recognized by the state, will be celebrated on May 29 of every year. The British Columbia provincial government has been celebrating Nepal Day for the first time, even though the day is celebrated in the name of other countries living in the region.

Although the Nepali community has been celebrating Nepal Day on a private level, this is the first time that it is being organized and coordinated by the government. With the continuous initiative of Chairman Bhattarai, who has been living in the state of British Columbia and providing medical treatment to 40 people through various enterprises since 2013, the provincial government is ready to celebrate Nepal Day.

The Nepal Culture Society of British Columbia is preparing to make the day of the Everest as Nepal Day by publicly asking the Nepali community. We asked the Nepali community and they all agreed to make the day of the Everest summit Nepal Day, said Chairman Bhattarai.

2026 is also the year when Nepal and Canada have 61 years of diplomatic relations, so Chairman Bhattarai says that the importance of the first Nepal Day will be even greater.

Diplomatic relations between Nepal and Canada were established on January 18, 1965, during the reign of the then King Mahendra of Nepal.

According to the 2021 Canadian census, 21,000 Nepalis live there. However, it is estimated that the number of people arriving in Canada on student and other visas could reach thousands.
